Good to Know
Before you start.
Design and permits for larger projects usually take 3 to 6 months before work starts.
- State law allows ADUs by right in most single-family zones, up to 900 square feet or half the size of the main home, whichever is smaller. Towns can still set rules on things like design and setbacks.
- ADUs need separate utilities planning and code-compliant egress.
FAQ
In-law apartment (ADU) questions.
Do I need a special permit for an ADU?+
In most single-family zones, a protected ADU is allowed by right, but you still need building permits and must meet local rules.
Attached or detached?+
Attached units often cost less. Detached units give more privacy. We will price both.
